Sequoia Adds First Woman to Its U.S. Investing Team

October 20, 2016

Sequoia Capital is diversifying its team of investing partners in the U.S. for the first time in its 44-year history.  Ms. Jess Lee will join the firm from Polyvore, a social shopping site that Yahoo acquired in 2015.  Sequoia’s team first met Ms. Lee in 2012 and has been trying to hire her for some time.

Ms. Lee, 33, joined Polyvore as a product manager and rose to VP of product before her promotion to CEO. She previously had worked Google’s maps division. She holds a BS in computer science from Stanford.

Sequoia has a reputation in Silicon Valley as one of the most successful VC firms. It was an early investor in companies such as Apple and Google.

Venture firms have struggled with diversity and rising attention to the role of women in the male-dominated field. Another prestigious firm, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, endured a grueling sexual-discrimination lawsuit filed by former partner Ellen Pao. The jury in her trial found she failed to prove discrimination.

Aileen Lee, the founder and partner of Cowboy Ventures, said it’s “fantastic” that Sequoia is hiring Jess Lee.  She added:  “Sequoia is a firm that a lot of people across tech and the Valley look to, and I think they’re setting an important example in adding new diversity to their team.”
