Otto Warmbier, U.S. Student Freed by North Korea, Has Died - RIP

June 19, 2017

Otto Warmbier, the UVa college student who was released by North Korea while in a coma, died Monday afternoon. He was 22. The family thanked the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treating him, but noted:

"Unfortunately, the awful torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today."

Warmbier had served 17 months of a 15-year sentence in North Korea after confessing to the "crime" of trying to steal a propaganda banner. Doctors said he returned with severe brain damage, but it wasn't clear what caused it.
