Goldman Sachs Names Elisha Wiesel Chief Information Officer

January 10, 2017

Elisha Wiesel, son of Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Elie Wiesel, is taking over the top technology job at Goldman Sachs. Goldman announced on Monday that Mr. Wiesel would become the CIO, taking over from Martin Chavez, a prominent executive who pushed to make Goldman more of a forward-looking technology firm. Mr. Chavez was recently elevated to CFO, effective this spring, after Gary Cohn departed Goldman Sachs to serve in Donald Trump’s administration.

Within Goldman’s traditionally button-down culture, Mr. Chavez is known for openly talking about how his personal life - as a Latino and gay man - played into his work. Mr. Wiesel, 44, is also best known for his life outside of Goldman - as the only child of the Nobel Peace Prize winner and author of “Night,” who died last summer. The younger Mr. Wiesel has said that his father gave him one rule to follow, in order to perpetuate the Jewish people traditions - marry Jewish.

“I remember I came home from college with a purple mohawk my freshman year, and my dad was not fazed,” Mr. Wiesel said in the interview. “He said: ‘I love you, and I would walk down the street with you any time, anywhere. I am not embarrassed. I would take you to shul like this and out to dinner. I love you. You are my son. You can do anything you want as long as you marry Jewish.’ ”

Mr. Wiesel came to Goldman as a result of his love of programming computer games, he said in an internal event at Goldman. While at Goldman, Mr. Wiesel has been the organizer of a vast, after-hours scavenger hunt that raised millions of dollars for charity.

Mr. Wiesel joined Goldman in 1994, in the same division where Mr. Chavez and the firm’s chief executive, Lloyd Blankfein, once worked, the J. Aron trading division. Most recently, he has been the chief risk officer in the firm’s overall trading division. In his new job, Mr. Wiesel will report to Mr. Chavez, who has been a longtime mentor.
