Feel Good Story: California High School Makes Millions in Snap IPO

March 5, 2017

An unlikely winner in the Snap IPO last Thursday was California’s Saint Francis High School, located in the heart of Silicon Valley. About 5 years ago, the school invested $15,000 of seed money into the start-up company – at the urging of Barry Eggers, whose daughter attended the school. Mr. Eggers is a partner at Lightspeed Ventures, which also was an early investor in Snap.

Interestingly enough, Barry first learned about the company from his daughter, who told him how insanely popular the Snapchat app was - along with the Angry Birds and Instagram apps.

While we don’t know how many shares the school owns, it’s clear that the stake could be worth tens of millions of dollars. Needless to say, the school is “thrilled.”

Lightspeed Ventures is also a big winner. Having invested over $8.1 in the venture, its stake was worth $1.5 billion when Snap went public (at $17/share) and nearly $2.2 billion when the shares hit $25 in the aftermarket.
