Dishwasher of Famed Carnegie Deli Makes Bid to Become the Owner

January 3, 2017

Carnegie Deli, the world-famous eatery in Midtown Manhattan and purveyor of towering pastrami sandwiches, closed its doors Friday, December 30th. But hope springs eternal, with at least one person seeking to reopen the restaurant - Sammy Musovic, who made a $10 million bid.

It was 3 decades ago when Mr. Musovic emigrated to the United States from what was then Yugoslavia, and his first job was washing dishes for $3 an hour at New York's iconic Carnegie Deli. Since leaving the Carnegie Deli, Mr. Musovic has gone on to own multiple Manhattan restaurants: Sojourn, Vero and Selena Rosa.

Musovic initially offered $5 million to buy the deli, which the Levine family rejected. Now he is doubling the offer to $10 million. But the current owner, Marian Harper, issued a statement saying that the deli is simply not for sale. Nor are they “considering any publicity inspired offers to buy the Carnegie Deli on 7th Avenue."

Instead, the family will continue to own and operate a meat processing plant and bakery in New Jersey that supplies the other remaining Carnegie Deli locations in Pennsylvania, Las Vegas, NY’s Madison Square Garden and the NY’s U.S. Open.
