Credit Suisse Banker Killed in NYC Bike Accident

June 13, 2017

by Howard Haykin

Dan Hanegby, 36, an investment banking director for Credit Suisse, was killed while riding a Cit Bike in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. While this was the first fatality for CitiBike since the program began 4 years ago, 4 bikers have been killed in NYC through April of 2017.

As a lifelong NYC resident, and an occasional bike rider, I can attest to the inherent dangers of riding a bicycle in Manhattan. I always wear a helmut, though Citi Bike users typically do not. Bike riders in Manhattan always face basic obstacles - even in parks and largely residential neighborhoods like Chelsea - like multitudes of absent-minded pedestrians, speeding or turning cars, and double-parked cars. Frankly, it's amazing there haven't been more accidents.

According to the NYTimes, which cited a police report, Mr. Hanegby "swerved to go around a parked van, struck a bus next to him that was traveling in the same direction, tumbled off the bicycle and fell under the bus’s rear tires."
