SEC to Consider Shortening Securities Trade Settlements

March 16, 2017

An Open Meeting will be held Wednesday, 3/22, for the SEC to consider whether to amend Rule 15c6-1 so as to shorten the standard settlement cycle for most broker-dealer transactions from 3 business days after trade date to 2 business days.

The proposal has the support of Wall Street and consumer groups, although many would prefer to see the settlement period from trade date reduced even further - to one-day. A reduced settlement period would reduce the exposure to credit and market risk.
