Jay Clayton, Nominee for SEC Chair, Passes Key Test

March 5, 2017

Sullivan & Cromwell partner Jay Clayton, Trump’s nominee to chair the SEC, received clearance from the U.S. Office of Government Ethics for any possible conflicts of interest. [Certainly a pleasant change of pace for a Trump nominee.] The White House will now pass along his nomination to the Senate, which will hold a hearing before the Senate Banking Committee.

Mr. Clayton is a M&A lawyer whose pro-business interests are a welcomed relief to Republicans and Wall Street alike after years of strict regulatory enforcement under former chairs Mary Jo White and Mary Shapiro.

Mr. Clayton has expressed an interest in promoting capital formation, in part by clearing some of the regulations that interfere with M&A deals and IPOs.
