How Trump Could Exact Revenge Against the NFL

January 1, 2017

There is said to be no love lost between Trump and the National Football League. The NFL won a 1986 court case against Donald Trump and the upstart USFL - Trump owned the New Jersey Generals franchise - which essentially put the junior league out of business. Trump also bid more than $1 billion for the Buffalo Bills in 2014, but was not the high bidder – and it’s not clear if enough NFL owners would have approved him as an owner if he had been the highest bidder.

Come January 20th, Trump will be in position to exact some revenge - if he wants to. Here’s how.

The NFL is dead-set against expanding legalized sports betting beyond Las Vegas, which runs contrary to the interests of New Jersey. So far, the NFL has been able to thwart NJ Governor Christie’s attempt to bring sports gambling to Atlantic City, with the backing of the Justice Department and other leagues. Trump could decide that sports gambling is a state issue, not a federal one - that would give Christie’s effort a major boost.

"I think, knowing Donald, there is a part of him that would like to get even with the NFL by saying, ‘Let’s allow gambling'," on NFL games in New Jersey, a source said.
