Charging Bull, Fearless Girl, Pissing Pug
Wall Street’s iconic “Charging Bull,” sculpted by artist Arturo Di Modica, was installed at the intersection of Broadway and Whitehall Street near New York’s Bowling Green in 1989.
Twenty-eight years later, on 3/7/17 - one day before International Women’s Day - “Fearless Girl” was added to the scene. Commissioned by State Street Global Advisors and sculpted by Kristen Visbal, Fearless Girl stands across from Charging Bull in a brave, proud and strong – but not defiant - pose.
On Tuesday, 5/30/17, “Pissing Pug,” or “Sketchy Dog,” took its place alongside Fearless Girl – albeit for 3 brief hours. NYC artist Alex Gardega, who had sculpted Pissing Pug, positioned the dog in direct aim of the Fearless Girl’s left leg - as retaliation for Fearless Girl’s placement across from Charging Bull.
Alex Gardego characterized Fearless Girl as “corporate nonsense,” saying it was put opposite artist Arturo Di Modica’s famed bull as a publicity stunt by a Boston-based financial firm. And he felt that the installation of Fearless Girl was disrespectful to the artist of Charging Bull.
Meanwhile, Charging Bull artist Di Modica is suing State Street Global Advisors for trademark and copyright infringement, while Fearless Girl gets to stand across from Charging Bull another 9 months.
